4 Techniques In Climbing Walls

Climbing is one of the most exciting, economical and effective sports that exist. And although it is not 100% risk-free, if we take the necessary security measures it is almost impossible for an accident to arise. In today’s post, we will show you the main techniques in climbing walls alone, on ice or in Boulder and we will show you the basic movements.

Solo Techniques In Climbing Walls

Solo climbing is one of the most dangerous and complicated since our safety depends exclusively on skill and experience. In this mode, any error or fall can have serious consequences, so it is reserved for veteran climbers who know perfectly the operation of the ropes, anchors, and meetings.

Despite its level of demand, the technique of solo climbing is one of the most exciting in mountain sports. For a wall of 200 meters with a slope that ranges between 30º and 35º, we will need 60 meters of rope and 9mm for double use, so the total length amounts to 30 meters. We will also use a special rock harness for mountaineering, several express, carabiners, and cordons. A lot of equipment that you must carry by yourself, have organized and easily accessible in your backpack.

We will highlight the two main techniques: self-insurance and a double rope. In the first, you have to choose a large rock and with the help of a sewn tape and the cord tie the rope with a double fisherman’s knot. For its part, the double rope consists of alternately passing the two ends through a series of locks that we are applying in the stone, being very important that they do not cross each other in a disorderly way.

Ice Techniques In Climbing Walls

As in the previous case, the ice climbing technique is very rewarding but not without risks. The reason? Adapt to the quality and texture of the ice, the low temperatures, the height and the time of the year in which we find ourselves.

The first-runner climber on an ice road must have the necessary knowledge and the ability to recognize the terrain, an essential step to choose the best ascension method and establish adequate safety margins that minimize accidents. It is responsible for placing insurance and meetings, a process that depends closely on the type of ice: crystalline, plastic, crust, blue or glacier.

The material we will use is very varied. Curved ice axes are very useful to facilitate hitching in vertical waterfalls, while dragons are optional. In long sections, it is advisable to use straps to avoid the loss of tools, something that could spoil our promotion. It is also common to use ice screws of different sizes and thicknesses to fix the track, as well as dissipating tapes that absorb a good part of the impact in case of a fall.

Boulder Techniques In Climbing Walls

Unlike solo or ice climbing, Boulder climbing gets recommendation for those who want to get started in the world of climbing, improve their skills or just train. The characterization is by low walls and the absence of support ropes, which mattresses replace on the floor.

Boulder climbing requires more skill than strength, despite which it will provide us with considerable muscular development while having fun. The goal is to overcome ourselves, choosing more and more complicated movements to ascend the path. A challenge for both our body and our head.

We can perform this sport indoors or outdoors, both natural and artificial Boulders. The latter has the advantage that their colors define the level of difficulty. This ranges from V0 (the simplest) to V15 (the most difficult). So, they will guide us to select the most comfortable route. Or, on the contrary, choose the most demanding.

A very common mistake is to start climbing the wall immediately since this technique requires that we plan our movements in advance. What dams are you going to use? In what order? And once up, if things do not go as planned, do not be afraid to improvise.

This also allows us to save a lot of energy by not constantly having to rectify the position. Instructors forbid the insertion of fingers in the plates, support the elbows or the knees or hold on to a rope. When you’re up there, your main tool will be common sense.

You will have to familiarize yourself with the different points of support with the help of your hands and feet. These provide us with greater stability and safety during the ascent. In addition, it allows us to improve our dynamic balance to access higher levels of difficulty.

General advice relates to starting with a static climbing style. That is, all movements must be reversible. Later, when we have acquired more experience we can start with the dynamic scale, which finds use in 7th-grade walls where we will have to make small jumps and other riskier maneuvers. And finally, we will talk about the importance of the center of gravity, which must be located in our navel. Therefore, it is not correct to raise the foot above the knees or stick too much to the walls.
