How does rock climbing provide an intense workout?

Rock climbing provides an intense workout by engaging all your major muscle groups. Your arms are engaged as you climb up the wall using various hand-holds that require you to pull yourself up. Your legs are engaged as you push off against the wall or foothold to lift your body upwards. And not only will your back muscles be worked out as you hang on the small holds, but your core muscles will be worked hard too because stabilizing yourself on those small holds comes from engaging them. As a result, climbers tend to have well-developed upper bodies with strong shoulders due to carrying the weight of their upper body as they climb.

Not only that, but your workouts will be intense and you will burn a lot of calories because the sport is highly aerobic. It is estimated that an hour of rock climbing can burn anywhere from 700-1000 calories! So even though it may seem like all arms and no legs, your calves and glutes are engaged too as these muscles contract to push off against the wall or foothold with each move you make. In fact, most climbers have extremely strong lower bodies from having to support their entire body weight with just a few small muscle groups! Rock climbing provides a great workout because it engages so many major muscle groups in your body. Simply put: rock climbing provides an intense workout because it is a full-body sport.
